![]() I have not played any modern military shooter, so I doubt that I would get anything out of Spec Ops. Quick disclaimer: I have not played Spec Ops: The Line. It did a bunch of things 'right' which let people talk about it. Some people talked about the story being a dark mirror to CoD style games, others talked about how the game mechanics helped support the story, others talked about how the art style was how to do 'gritty' war shooters that still had color and contrast in them. There isn't a uniform opinion on the game, because what it did was let people talk about different things with their own biases. It presented things in a different way, which let people who are neck deep reviewing games have an example of the stuff they were already wanting to talk about. It is also a game that rewards thinking about the story, in a meta sense.īy comparing different games you can get a bunch of dialogue out of it about games in general, which is why the critic-sphere exploded when it came out. It isn't really a deconstruction of first person shooters then it is a deconstruction of Mass Effect. What it does however is let you see the contrast between Spec Ops and other games. The game is self contained, there isn't a "You have to act like Walker is really character X from another game, and then it makes sense!" stuff to it.ĭoes playing other FPS games help enhance the story? Not really. There is a coherent story, and it does not require you to play or understand other games. People overblow the 'you have to play other FPS games to get it' angle. Not worth playing hard mode for, but it's works with what it has, and varies it up very well with positioning/level design. It's one that is well worth playing twice, because things you overlooked or ignored at first fit together in ways so you understand what the game's themes and messages where really pointing to, when most people just pick up a "You bastard!" moral then stop thinking about it.Īs for the combat. It's closer to a survival horror game in that figuring out whats going on with the plot is one of the main engagements. If you want a good story in a game, it's hard to beat Spec Ops for the length:quality ratio. If you already know about the twists you may not get the same "Holy Shit!" effect as others, but most people bitching about the game miss out of the many many character moments that help contrast the big things. It isn't like Mass Effect where the hype is all about YOUR choices and YOUR squad and YOUR destiny. I think alot of people take it personal when the game has bad things happen to walker, because they feel like the game in personally attacking them. While there are 'choices' in the game, these are things Walker may of gone either way in, while all the major big choices are invisible because. Unlike most FPS shooters, Walker isn't some empty shell you're supposed to fill. It's kind of like if you were expecting Resident Evil 4, and got Silent Hill 2 instead. Them, even when things are such a mess it's hard to make those distinctions. Without going into spoilers, Walker consistently frames the conflict between Us vs. It isn't an 'anti-war' game, but it tries to make the point that there isn't an 'simple' war, and that by trying to frame things as a simple conflict may in fact make things worse. Wow, people really, really, don't like that it wasn't like CoD here. TLDR, you will like it if you like movies like Apocalypse Now but you will have to endure the mediocre gameplay mechanics. You can see what's wrong with it when you paid 40$ for it. They got told that they suck and shouldn't have played the game instead. It was promoted as a COD like story so many people bought it expecting to have fun, go kill virtual people and save the day. ![]() The problem at launch was that it wasn't promoted as such. Your actions won't mean anything (spoiler) except the end and that's debeatable too.(spoiler ends) or change the story in any way, very much like other modern FPS games. Every action you take will make the situation worse through no fault of your own as the game is heavily railroaded. It isn't a game where you will save the day by killing lots of people. I loved the story but any enjoyment you can get from it will depend on why you bought the game: It is a deconstruction of the standard FPS/TPS military hero. It has a very good story but mediocre gameplay mechanics. One correction, Spec Ops's a TPS not a FPS.
